Rap in Burma

Perhaps not a place where you would expect to find radical rap, yet the BBC just ran a very interesting piece on how hip-hop is being used in Burma to challenge the regime. Generation Wave (or here)  is the name of the group and although apparently "it is not likely to win any Grammys", it does plan to smuggle CDs in Burma that encourage nothing less than an uprising against the Government. The group uses a safe house in Thailand, and has a strict non-violent policy. It was created after the 2007 protests, and has already seen some of its members emprisonned. Apart from that the group has all the characteristics that one might expect of a 21st Century disobedience movement including technological savviness and an awareness of how the internet can be used to spread their message, but can also make them targets of surveillance.
